Quaint Traditional Eclectic Sitting Room...

Traditional design is by far one of my most favorite of all design styles. This design style always seemed so upper crust to me with its classic and refined furniture in highly polished wood tones, bold color palettes, and patterned fabrics, making for some very warm and inviting interiors.

Today however, Traditional Design is considered rather out dated, old fashioned and too heavy or gaudy to some degree. Not to say that traditional design is a dying trend, not by any means, it is however a design that has morphed into a more modern identity known as “Transitional”. This design style encompasses a mixture of traditional and modern pieces, popular due to its simplistic and clean lines, neutral color palettes yet symbolic of traditional design elements, but in a more relaxed and minimalist way.

Design styles are ever changing and reinventing as personal demands dictate, much like the fashion industry that changes constantly. I personally feel that most designs border on an eclectic collection of pieces or elements that seem to find their way in to a design with several other trends, but collaborated in a way that works so effortlessly and harmoniously together.

Traditional furniture as you know is found at consignment stores, garage sales and many of these pieces have stood the test of time and due to their undeniable quality and workmanship are being repurposed and re-upholstered to see another day. There is something quite gratifying about seeing the guts of an old dilapidated chair come to life after receiving a face lift of sorts with a new coat of paint or stain, new foam cushioning and updated fabric but still maintaining its “ one-of-a-kind integrity”!

Generation X’ers and Millennials who have come to inherit furniture and accessories from their Grandparents aka Baby Boomers are finding ways to keep these sentimental works of art in their designs and bring new life and significance to these treasured pieces.

This Design Concept is based on that premise with mixing old with new and balancing both design styles. With the bulk of the design being reserved for the fine furniture Pedestal Table, TV Armoire and 4 Drawer Accent chest bringing in softer and lighter scale pieces was essential so the room didn’t become overwhelmed with heavy larger scaled pieces.

When you have such rich wood tones in several pieces, try to bring in lighter softer pieces to counteract them. This small sectional immediately adjusts the whole ambience of the space because of its neutral color and simple design. The glass and gold framed coffee table is practical, light and airy and will help to achieve a more spacious feel to the room.

Traditional area rugs are infused with such robust color ways and patterns it is easy to pick out color preferences to then add and compliment to other areas in the room either with wall coverings and fabric choices..

So when choosing a design style, think of one that is going to give you more bang for the buck with so many choices and possibilities and less limitations and don’t be inclined to follow the rules of what each design style should look like and represent, but more about how you want a design to make you feel!
